@ksgarner: I was always taught in fashion school that trends trickle down from the runway and high fashion. I believed that for a long time. Once I got more into the fashion scene and making clothing for myself and others, I started to see that it trickled up often from us small designers/makers. Especially when the big wave of up-cycling hit. You started to see quilts and up-cycled “inspired” pieces on the runway. Even some re-purposing! Trends do trickle down as well for sure. I’ve always been inspired by the runway. But I think small designers have a HUGE impact on fashion and trends as a whole! So if you feel small time, you aren’t. Your work is important. Your vision is needed. This also isn’t to shame anyone that may buy one of these bedspreads from the big red store. If you follow me, you know I do not shame on my page. I like to *uplift*!!!! There are definitely times I need to shop at these big corps (like today! I needed diapers because ones I ordered didn’t arrive) We are all human. I just believe it’s good to shop consciously as much as possible for our individual circumstances. Sew, KEEP SEWING! We are making a difference ❤️ Thank you for being a part of this sewing army 🧵
pretty sure i was seeing fake quilts at k mart in the 90s

What you’re saying is true, but the quilt was a terrible example

It does trickle down, but YOU are at the top, not the big/faceless companies .. they are the ones at the bottom, feeding on your scraps

My biggest wish is a sewing machine for Christmas! (My dad already has one he wants me to get because the one I wished for was pink but my dad found a better one in the price range they have!) I’m so excitedddddd

I see it all the time. It’s amazing how it trickles down but the trend cycle is terrifyingly short these days. I don’t know the connection but it feels like they are constantly taking these beautiful makers works and then manufacturing a disposable version that feels so predatory and weird. Like the amount of time it takes to make a quilt is so special and they can never duplicate that. They are so parasitic.

It’s so crazy. Because I’ve been in both situations. 1. Where you’re so busy you don’t have time or energy to be creative so you look to others who do to inspire you. 2. You have endless amounts of time and inspiration to develop ideas and then you see some big brand knocking you off and it’s sooooooooo frustrating.

100%. people always say it's the trickle down, but it starts with trickling up. Big brands do research into smaller designers and brands. take that as inspiration or in some cases. Knock it off, and that's how the trickle down starts. And by the time it gets back down to us, it's considered last season/ two seasons ago.
