Velvet Flower (Ronghua) is an intangible cultural heritage craft of China, with a history dating back more than a thousand years. It was once an ornate hair ornament for imperial concubines and noble ladies. The name “Ronghua” shares the same pronunciation as “glory and prosperity” in Chinese, making it an auspicious token. Craftsmen use natural silk and annealed copper wire as core materials. After degumming, dyeing, combing, twisting and shaping, the silk turns into fluffy, lifelike blossoms such as plum blossoms and peonies. Natural mineral pigments like cinnabar and malachite are used for colouring. No glue is needed in the traditional process. Every petal is fixed purely by the twisting force of copper wire.
