@yoen11: Yes, that is true. In late 2026, the U.S. Department of Defense announced a major homeland defense strategy known as the FORTRESS initiative. Under this policy, around 500 major U.S. military bases in the continental United States are tasked with becoming self-sufficient—ensuring they can sustain mission-critical operations for at least 90 days without relying on civilian municipal water, local power grids, or external fuel and supply lines. Why Is This Happening? Is Something About to Happen? The directive is not an indication of an imminent attack or immediate catastrophe, but rather a long-term strategic shift to update defense infrastructure. The main reasons for the policy include: Vulnerabilities in the Civilian Power Grid: Officials noted that relying on local public utilities poses a major national security risk. If an adversary targets the domestic power grid via cyberattacks, physical sabotage, or electromagnetic disruptions, military command structures could be compromised. Shift in Defense Doctrine: Pentagon leadership stated that traditional assumptions that geographic distance would fully shield the U.S. mainland are outdated. Future conflicts could involve threats directly targeting infrastructure on domestic soil. Resilience Technologies: To achieve 90-day independence, bases are upgrading to independent microgrids, utility-scale battery storage, on-site solar/geothermal generation, and portable micro-reactors. #europe #unitedstates #unitedkingdom #indonesia #australia
