@general_of_jesus: 2 Peter 1:20–21 (KJV): “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Glory to God. If we approach Scripture believing that we have the authority to accept whatever pleases us and reject whatever offends us, we place ourselves above the very Word that is meant to correct us. Instead of allowing God to judge our thoughts and actions, we begin judging God’s Word by our own preferences. Isaiah 55:8–9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” We must therefore approach Scripture with humility, recognising that our understanding is limited and that we need correction. Without this understanding, people can distort Scripture to justify their sins. And if all Scripture is inspired by God, then we cannot legitimately change its meaning simply because its teachings challenge our lifestyles, desires, or beliefs. Glory to God. Consider how Peter warned us in 2 Peter 3:16, “…which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” Notice the seriousness of this warning: Peter explains that people can distort Scripture to their own destruction. And in the process, mocking God by taking his word out of context. Why does this happen? Sometimes people approach the Bible with conclusions they have already decided upon. Instead of allowing Scripture to shape their beliefs, they search for passages that appear to support what they already want to believe. This is the problem. The danger is that a person can convince himself that he is obeying God while actually using God’s Word to defend his disobedience. A person who welcomes only the comforting passages but rejects the corrective ones is not allowing Scripture to accomplish everything for which it was given. We must distinguish between what God says and what human beings want him to say. Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Glory to God. We must allow the whole counsel of Scripture to shape our understanding rather than allowing our preferred understanding to dictate which parts of Scripture we accept. This is how we come into the understanding and the wisdom of the almighty. Amen. To be able to discern what is God's purpose, what pleases him and the things that also displeases him. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And we attain an understanding of the Most High by applying his word into our lives and seeking his presence daily. #fy #jesuslovesyou
