Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, arrived in Miami on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after losing Brazil’s presidential election and receiving authorization to enter the United States from the Trump administration. Bolsonaro was defeated Sunday, October 25, by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a closely contested presidential runoff. According to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula secured 51.79% of the vote, receiving 64,256,232 votes, while Bolsonaro received 48.21%, totaling 59,826,041 votes. Lula won by approximately 4.4 million votes. The election marked a significant political comeback for Lula, who trailed Bolsonaro in the first round of voting earlier in October before winning the runoff. Following his defeat, Bolsonaro refused to concede and questioned the election results, alleging irregularities and calling for the outcome to be annulled. However, Brazilian election authorities confirmed Lula’s victory, and Bolsonaro has not presented evidence establishing widespread electoral fraud. Just days after the election, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports in connection with ongoing investigations involving alleged corruption and money laundering. Bolsonaro subsequently left Brazil, traveling through Argentina and Ecuador before arriving in Miami aboard a private aircraft. The Trump administration granted visas to Bolsonaro and his family. President Donald Trump also publicly stated that Bolsonaro was welcome in the United States and questioned the Brazilian election outcome. Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing in the criminal investigations. He has not been convicted of the alleged offenses discussed in those investigations. His arrival has drawn international attention, raising questions about Brazil’s election dispute, the ongoing investigations and the U.S. administration’s decision to welcome the defeated presidential candidate.
