@occonews: President Donald Trump says he supports Brazilian Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro coming to the United States after his presidential election defeat. A senior State Department official has also said visas will be issued to Bolsonaro and his family. Speaking early October 28 at Joint Base Andrews after campaigning in Texas, Trump said: “Well, I would approve. I think they’re fine people.” Asked where Bolsonaro was, Trump said he had heard he was in Argentina. He did not confirm his location. Flávio is the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro—not his father. He lost the October 25 runoff to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, refused to concede and said he would challenge the result. His departure comes amid legal scrutiny. The Associated Press reported that Bolsonaro was under investigation in Brazil for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion and had been ordered to surrender his passport. A Trump adviser told CNN that U.S. officials knew his passport deadline was approaching and made clear that he would be allowed into the country. Accounts of his movements remain inconsistent. CNN cited a person familiar with the situation who said Bolsonaro had arrived in the U.S. on October 27. Trump later said he had heard he was in Argentina, while Argentine authorities had denied having a record of his entry. The State Department official, speaking anonymously because of visa privacy rules, confirmed plans to issue visas but did not disclose their category, duration or any immigration status. Visas and permission to enter are not the same as political asylum. The reporting reviewed does not establish that asylum has been granted. Trump also criticized Brazil’s election. His remarks are political assertions, not evidence that fraud occurred.
