There are definitely questions being raised about whether nurses should actually be allowed to sleep during their breaks. My answer? YES, we should! If I’m working a long shift and I have an unpaid break, that time is for my rest. Whether I need to eat, sit quietly, go outside, grab a coffee, or even close my eyes for 20 minutes, why shouldn’t I be able to? It’s concerning that in some NHS trusts, staff are being told they cannot sleep during their breaks. There are even reports of staff being told they can’t leave the ward during their break. But really, if that break is genuinely unpaid, and I’m expected to remain available for patients or emergencies, it raises a crucial question: is it truly a break? ACAS states that rest breaks should be uninterrupted and taken away from the work area. NHS Employers guidance recognizes the benefits of a short power nap during an authorized break to help manage fatigue. Nurses are putting in long shifts, dealing with incredibly sick patients, emergencies, medications, distress, and constant responsibility. So, just to clarify, I’m not suggesting nurses should sleep on the job. I’m saying if you’ve been given an unpaid rest break, you should be allowed to REST properly. Because tired nurses aren’t safer nurses. Let nurses REST. 💤 #Nurses #Nursing #NHS #NurseTok #NHSNurses
