What does Chris use to clean our setup? This is one of the MOST asked questions we’ve had in the 15 years we’ve been sharing our travels. We’ve even had people say there’s no way we take them off-road because they’re too clean 😂 Trust me, we do. Chris just takes a huge amount of pride in looking after our gear and puts some serious hours into it. This clean after East Arnhem Land has been a big one. We had red dirt and bulldust over everything, then drove through torrential rain on the way back, so it all turned into a muddy mess over the whole setup. One product Chris absolutely LOVES is Autosmart ALI. It’s strong stuff and heavily diluted, and it needs to come off quickly, but the difference it makes underneath is incredible. He spent FOUR HOURS under the caravan alone, and the galvanising, chassis and everything he cleaned under there has come back up looking almost new again. He loves ALI so much that yesterday, after some massive driving days back from East Arnhem Land, we left our overnight stop at 5am, arrived on the Sunshine Coast around 10am and he started cleaning at about 1pm. Two hours later he was running out of ALI, so we jumped back in the car and did another hour of driving just to go and get a couple more bottles from the Autosmart rep 😂 He cleaned until 5pm yesterday, then started again at 5am this morning and went right through until 5pm tonight. Tomorrow he’s back into it again. For the composite sides and general outside of the van he uses Bowden’s Snow Wash, but there’s no magic spray-and-rinse happening here. Red dirt and bulldust takes a LOT of elbow grease to get off properly. He also uses Bowden’s Orange Agent for stubborn staining around the rubbers and seals. Even after using ALI, some things still need more work. The wheels still need polishing afterwards to get them back to how Chris likes them. Preparation is a big part of it too. When we really want to go the extra mile, we take our gear to PDD at Browns Plains. They do detailing, ceramic coating, PPF and all that sort of thing, so if Chris doesn’t have time to do the whole job, only gets part of it done, or we’re staying somewhere like a caravan park where he can’t do it himself, PDD can take over and finish it properly. Our paint, wheels and suspension are ceramic coated too, with Chris doing the ceramic coating on the wheels and suspension himself, which definitely helps when it comes time to clean everything again. We’ve parked up on a friend’s property on the Sunshine Coast for three days purely so Chris can get the whole setup done before we head back to Brisbane and then down to Tasmania. He’s done most of the caravan, the boat and part of the truck so far, with the rest of the truck happening tomorrow. So yes, ALI is one of his favourite products and it does an amazing job, but there’s still no getting around the biggest part of it… hours and hours of elbow grease. That’s why our gear looks the way it does, even after we take it off-road 😁 PLEASE NOTE: ALI is something Chris uses for the heavy-duty deep cleans like this. It’s definitely NOT something he uses every time he washes the setup. Gloves and eye protection should absolutely be worn when using it. Chris is Chris and doesn’t do this no matter how much I ask him to 😅 It’s corrosive and can cause serious damage to skin and eyes, so please do as I say and NOT as he does!
