THEY SEALED THE CAVES AND LEFT HUNDREDS TO DIE — ALGERIA, 1845 In June 1845, during the French conquest of Algeria, one of the most horrifying atrocities of the colonial era unfolded in the mountains of Algeria. Hundreds of men, women, and children sought refuge inside a network of caves. They believed the rocky chambers would protect them from the advancing French army. Instead, the caves became a deadly trap. French forces commanded by Colonel Aimable Pélissier surrounded the caves where members of the Ouled Riah tribe had taken shelter. Rather than launch a direct assault, French troops gathered enormous quantities of wood, brushwood, and other combustible materials around the cave entrances. Then they set them on fire. Thick, suffocating smoke poured into the underground chambers, spreading through the tunnels and consuming the available air. Families were trapped in darkness. Parents struggled to protect their children. Escape routes were blocked as the smoke continued to penetrate deeper into the caves. The French troops maintained their positions outside. When soldiers eventually entered, they discovered the devastating aftermath: entire families had perished inside the caves. Historical accounts describe hundreds of victims, although estimates of the death toll vary. The atrocity became known as the Enfumades of the Ouled Riah — the suffocation of the Ouled Riah. News of the killings sparked condemnation, including criticism within France itself. Yet the incident became part of a much larger history of violence during the French conquest of Algeria. More than 180 years later, the tragedy remains a powerful symbol of colonial brutality and the suffering of civilians caught in imperial conquest. They entered the caves seeking safety. The smoke turned their refuge into a tomb. History must never forget the victims. #HistoryOfCivilizations #HistoryUncovered #Algeria #AlgerianHistory #OuledRiah
