In Ghana's far west, a whole village lives on a lake. They say a snail chose it. 🐌 Nzulezu means "surface of the water." The story goes, their ancestors came from Walata, a desert city of the old Ghana Empire, nearly 1,500 km away, and a snail showed them the way. At snail speed. They built on the water. School, church, pounding fufu, even baptisms and funerals all happen up there. And on Thursday, the lake's sacred day, nobody works it. That old empire? In 1957, at independence, the Gold Coast took its name: Ghana. There's more to Ghana than Accra. Come to the Western Region, and take the last hour by canoe. Akwaaba. Download the Akwaaba app, tap Start Planning, and plan your trip free (link in bio). Would you follow a snail home? 👇 #Nzulezu #Ghana #Akwaaba #WesternRegion #VisitGhana #GhanaTravel #Diaspora #BlackTravel #MoreThanAccra — Sources: UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Tentative List Ref. 1394 (submitted 2000 by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board; text read via the Internet Archive capture of 26 Feb 2025); Ghana Museums and Monuments Board; Ghana Tourism Authority (visitghana.com); Daily Graphic, "Life on the Amanzuri Lake"; Ghana Independence Act 1957, s.1; Encyclopaedia Britannica, "Ghana"; Citi Newsroom, "From Gold Coast to Ghana" (J.
