I’m surprised people don’t know herkimer diamonds are not in fact diamonds. It’s so well known that they are, in fact quartz and are still mined by amateur and tourists in herkimer county but I grew up here, it’s very well known around here

Herkimer Diamond is like a title. If someone’s name is Jane Doe, she’s not a Jane doe. She’s a human being. Herkimer Diamond is the name of a double terminated quartz that is unique to the Herkimer and surrounding areas.

Herkimer? As in Herkimer Homolka from the movie Congo? The man who lost his life looking for diamonds?

Just shop with reputable jewelers. Most are excited to show you these features in their presentation. Shopping online is dubious.

Calling something a Herkimer diamond isn’t sneaking around the rules - that’s the common name for that particular type of quartz and it’s easily looked up.

sunstone isn't just found in Oregon. Louisiana has them too. any place that has the right wet conditions can form a feldspar.

Is London topaz real topaz? I didn't pay a crazy amount for that ring but of the jewelry I have, that's the only one named after a place

Technically topaz can come in grey, but it is rare and I can't say I have ever heard it called Smokey topaz. Also the specimen I have under a loop looks like maybe a color shift or bicolor occurring between a brown topaz and a blue. I found it near Llano, Texas.

I never thought any of them were real because they were mass produced.
