On July 17, 1944, approximately 57,600 German prisoners of war were marched through the streets of Moscow under Soviet guard. The event, known as Operation Great Waltz or the Parade of the Vanquished, followed the Soviet victory during Operation Bagration, which resulted in the capture of tens of thousands of German soldiers and officers. The prisoners, many wearing worn and dirty uniforms, were escorted through Moscow in a carefully organized public demonstration intended to show the scale of the German defeat. After the prisoners had passed, Soviet street-cleaning vehicles drove along the same route, washing the streets with water. This symbolic act was intended to demonstrate the cleansing of Moscow after the passage of the defeated German army and formed part of the Soviet propaganda presentation of the event. Following the march, the prisoners were transported by train to Soviet prisoner-of-war and labor camps across the USSR, including camps in regions such as Karaganda, Kuibyshev (present-day Samara), Stalingrad, and Cherepovets. They were not all sent to a single camp. For many of these men, captivity continued for years under difficult conditions, and not all survived to return home. 🎞️ AI Colorization Notice: This authentic historical footage has been restored and colorized with the help of artificial intelligence.
