@armedforcesfacts: Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the only tri-service base in the Department of Defense. It spans 42,000 acres in New Jersey, 18 miles southeast of Trenton. On October 1, 2009, three separate installations were merged into one: McGuire Air Force Base, the Army's Fort Dix and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. The Air Force runs base operations through the 87th Air Base Wing, while the Army and Navy keep command of their own missions. Lakehurst was also the site of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster.
