@chatlgy7: New CC! my friend dancing . . . . Halloween began over 2,000 years ago as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Celtic Origins: Samhain • Marked the end of the harvest and the start of the Celtic New Year on November 1st. • Celebrated on the night of October 31st, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead blurred. • People lit bonfires and wore animal skins or spooky costumes to trick and ward off roaming ghosts or spirits. Christian Influence: Allhallowtide • The Catholic Church designated November 1st as All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day) to honor saints and martyrs. • The night before—October 31st—was called All Hallows' Eve, which eventually shortened to Halloween. • November 2nd became All Souls' Day, a time to pray for the dead. Medieval traditions like "souling" involved poor people going door-to-door for food in exchange for prayers. Jack-o'-Lanterns and Immigration • In Ireland and Britain, people carved scary faces into turnips, potatoes, or beets to scare away a mythical figure named Stingy Jack. • In the 1840s, Irish and Scottish immigrants fled to North America during the potato famine and brought these traditions with them. • Immigrants found that native American pumpkins were much larger and easier to carve than turnips, creating the modern jack-o'-lantern. Modern Evolution • By the 20th century, community leaders and newspapers tried to make the day focus more on neighborly parties and games rather than pranks. • Modern trick-or-treating grew out of older European souling, mumming, and neighborhood pranks by the mid-20th century. You can read a more detailed overview of these events on Britannica's Halloween Guide. If you want, I can share more about: • The folklore of Stingy Jack • The history of specific candy and treats • How Halloween is celebrated around the world @Klix @𝐂𝐔𝐁.𝐕𝟐🧨 [🇧🇷🪖] @TSX DRAGON
