He expanded the house significantly to accommodate his large family of 11 children. Dr. Pendleton is notable for pioneering the "Pendleton Formula," becoming one of the first entrepreneurs to successfully use cottonseed and animal matter to manufacture commercial fertilizer. • The Graves Era & Victorian Transformation (1880): Wealthy merchant and banker Richard Augustus Graves bought the house. He extensively remodeled the building, adding the Queen Anne Victorian embellishments seen today, including the distinct octagonal roof spires, a massive one-story wraparound veranda with decorative brackets, a geometric railing, and a projecting entrance pediment.
