As a prison psychiatrist, I think it should be a case by case basis. Some committed violent crimes during a mental state they are no longer in (eg serious substance use and/or immaturity and/or lack of adaptive coping skills). Long sentences can sometimes be transformative especially if there is good mentorship and consistent mental health treatment. I do think everyone, including those convicted of serious offenses, deserve the opportunity to learn. Many prisoners never had the opportunity to graduate HS so education is not something they take for granted.

I am a licensed attorney. While not every law school grad becomes an attorney, i don’t believe this person would pass the.Character & Fitness part of the bar admission process. I assumed law schools performed a minimum character assessment before admitting students. This person’s crimes should have barred him from being admitted to law school. The crimes, conviction, and his record will almost certainly prevent him from ever practicing law.

Oof… as a young woman in law school I would have been VERY uncomfortable in school with this guy. I’m a criminal defense attorney and believe in do your time and then you do you, BUT law school comes with lots of late night studying and time alone. Students should feel safe in their school. They could allow him to study virtually or something, but on campus violent offenders are a no for me.
