Our new study estimates that 75% of NFL players who died between 2008 and 2023 had CTE. I know this is a difficult number to hear, especially for former players and families who may already be worried about their brain health. I want to acknowledge those concerns while also offering some important context and hope. The study, led by researchers at the Boston University CTE Center in collaboration with Mass General Brigham and the @Concussion and CTE Foundation, was published today in JAMA Network Open. The 75% number is a historical estimate based on an analysis of death records and data from brain donors and non-donors. It does not mean that 75% of all current or former NFL players have CTE, and not everyone who has CTE will have symptoms. In Alzheimer's disease, about 1 in 4 never develop symptoms. For me, this research reinforces two priorities: We need to make sure former players and families know they are not alone and have access to the medical resources, guidance, and support they need today. We can reduce the risk of CTE in future generations if we commit to reducing repetitive head impacts. CTE is a serious brain disease, and we still have a lot of work ahead of us. But I don't want anyone to see this number and feel hopeless. We are learning more every day, and there are people working tirelessly to find answers, improve care, and make sports safer. If you're a former player or family member struggling with symptoms or worried about what the future holds, please know you're not alone. You don't have to navigate this by yourself. If you want to sign up for research so we have hope for a cure someday, we have a role for you. Send me a DM and I'll make sure you get connected with the support you need and signed up for research if you’re interested.
