@denewsbabaai: Iran’s relatively cheap Shahed drones are creating a costly challenge for American air defences, forcing the Pentagon to explore unconventional ways to stop them. One option under consideration is using AH-64 Apache attack helicopters to intercept and destroy these drones before they reach their targets. The idea is straightforward: instead of relying entirely on expensive missiles, helicopters could use their onboard weapons to engage relatively slow-moving drones, potentially reducing the cost of each interception. However, the strategy comes with risks. Flying helicopters into areas where enemy air defences are active could expose American pilots to serious danger. The bigger issue is the growing imbalance between the cost of attack and defence. Iran can potentially launch relatively inexpensive drones, while the United States may spend far more to intercept them. Although Apache helicopters could offer another layer of protection, their effectiveness would depend on the operating environment, detection systems, ammunition costs and the number of drones approaching simultaneously. Ultimately, this is about more than helicopters versus drones. It is about whether the United States can develop a sustainable, affordable defence against weapons designed to overwhelm sophisticated military systems. The Apache may become part of the solution, but a combination of electronic warfare, guns, specialised interceptor drones and lower-cost air-defence systems may be needed to address the threat effectively.
