Asymmetric Mountain Guerrilla Warfare The highlanders of Vrancea lived in a highly autonomous confederation of villages deep within dense forests and jagged valleys. Because they lacked massive stone castles or standing legions, they fought an invisible war: • The Snare: Local fighters would purposely allow Mongol scouting parties to enter deep, narrow mountain choke points. • The Ambush: Once the riders were trapped in the valleys, Vrancea warriors ambushed them from the higher ridges using heavy bows, rolling boulders, and massive felled trees. This neutralized the Mongols' horse mobility, making their specialized cavalry useless. 2.
