@familiar.strangers_: i asked her not to bring up my dad at family dinners. i explained it more than once, calmly, that our relationship is complicated and it hurts when she jokes about it in front of people. she nodded every time. then last thanksgiving, in front of twelve people, she made the same joke again. everyone laughed except me. i didn't make a scene. i excused myself, went outside, and sat on the porch steps in the cold for a while. when she came out to ask why i was being sensitive, i told her i wasn't angry. i was just finally clear. she knew exactly what hurt me and she did it anyway. that's not a mistake, that's a choice. i've put more distance between us since then. not out of spite, just out of self respect.
