American living in Germany here! What’s funny is they’ll call us “Americans”, even in hospitals “the American”, and then when we refer to ourselves as Americans they jump at the opportunity to call us stupid because we referred to ourselves as the exact reference they use to describe us…

when I went to Canada for the first time on a school trip, they told us to not use American since they are too. every single Canadian called us the Americans

It always makes me laugh cause they’re like “Canada and Mexico and all of South America are also in the AMERICAS so they too are AMERICAN🤪” like I actually dare you to find a Canadian who earnestly calls themself an “American.”

I hate when they try to say “yeah well in Spanish we call you “estadounidenses”. Yeah in SPANISH. Estadounidense does NOT translate to United Stations because it simply isn’t a word in the English language. Not all words between languages have a direct translation and any bilingual person should understand that. Idk why they get their panties in a bunch about this either because it’s not like Mexicans or Brazilians are calling themselves Americans 😂

We do have a word to describe people from the United States of America. it's American. just like people from the Kingdom of Sweden are Swedish. or people from the Republic of Ireland are Irish. United States describes our system of government. America is the name of our country.

Never met a human being that took issue with South Africans calling themselves South African. They don't care that Namibia or Mozambique or Zimbabwe are also in southern Africa, they can suddenly understand the concept the moment it stops being about the US.

I was just in Japan and I had an old Japanese man ask where I’m from. I told him the United States and he looked so confused. He didn’t understand until I said “I’m from America”. Then it was “ohhhhh America!”
