The Maratha–Bengal War (1742–1751) consisted of a series of invasions of the Nawabate of Bengal by the Maratha Empire. Although the Marathas repeatedly launched swift raids that, counterintuitively, devastated Hindu-majority western Bengal and Bihar, destroying villages, disrupting agriculture and trade, and inflicting widespread suffering, Bengal’s continued military successes in pitched battles under the 70+ year-old Nawab Alivardi Khan prevented the Marathas from occupying any permanent territory in Bengal. Shejwalkar, in his specialist study of the Bengal episode in Maratha history, reaches the same conclusion: the Marathas failed to hold any territory in Bengal and were decisively repelled in every pitched encounter, many times where the Bengalis were completely outnumbered. In 1751, Bengal forced a strategic settlement under which it ceded the frontier province of Orissa to the Marathas and agreed to pay tribute in exchange for an end to the hostilities. The record of the conflict is therefore clear in its broad outlines: the Nawabate of Bengal, governed by Muslim Bengali administrators and defended by Muslim Bengali commanders, won the decisive engagements of the Maratha wars, inflicting heavy losses on the invaders while suffering comparatively modest military losses of its own. The civilian losses, meanwhile, were concentrated among the populations of Bihar and the western districts, who bore the brunt of the raids. To describe the Maratha invasions as a military success, or the Nawabate of Bengal as having failed in its military resistance, is to misread the evidence assembled by Datta, Sarkar, Rahim and Bhattacharya alike. #educational #History #bengali #india #muslim
