@intels5: Fish abundance in the Gulf’s deep open waters fell by 64% in the years following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to research published in PNAS. Large crustaceans declined by 62%, while squid and other cephalopods fell by 60%. Researchers combined more than 2,000 net samples with acoustic surveys and genetic evidence, finding sustained losses among animals that feed larger predators. After examining other possible explanations, including changes in temperature, oxygen and food supply, the team identified the spill and its response as the most likely explanation, without establishing direct causation.
