@passage.ai_travel: Anchorage is mountains, moose and midnight sun, but its streets hold stories most people walk straight past. Five of them: 1. A town with a sobriety clause. Anchorage began in 1915 as a tent camp by Ship Creek, built to serve the Alaska Railroad. The new townsite was meant to be a model of sobriety, so lots were auctioned with a catch: get caught breaking the alcohol laws and you could forfeit yours. 2. The first wood-frame house. The Oscar Anderson House, built in 1915 in what is now Elderberry Park, is described as the first wood-frame house in Anchorage. Anderson claimed to be the 18th person to set foot on the site and lived there until 1974. 3. A firebreak that became an airstrip. The Delaney Park Strip started as a firebreak. In 1924 residents cleared a landing field there and Noel Wien flew the first passenger flights out of Anchorage. Alaska Railroad Engine 556 has sat at its corner since 1959. 4. Where Cook turned around. In 1778 Captain Cook anchored HMS Resolution under a bluff near the mouth of Ship Creek. He explored the southern arm, ran aground on a sandbar and called it River Turnagain. Today it is Turnagain Arm. 5. A neighborhood that slid away. Earthquake Park sits where the Turnagain neighborhood lost 75 houses to a landslide in the magnitude 9.2 Good Friday earthquake of March 27, 1964, the largest ever recorded in North America.
