As a matter of fact, bullying should never be normalized, excused, or encouraged. Parents, please do better when raising your children. No child should grow up thinking that killing or shooting another person is acceptable. Children should not have access to weapons, let alone possess the mindset that taking someone’s life is an option. He was only 15 years old. He moved from Ghana in search of a better life, with his whole future ahead of him. Now, that future has been taken away. I pray that he receives the justice he deserves. Imagine having to run for your life and still being shot simply because of your background, your accent, or where you come from. What’s even more disturbing is that the very people judging someone for having an accent have accents and cultural backgrounds of their own. Imagine those same children traveling to Ghana or any other country. They, too, would be considered foreigners. Their accents, mannerisms, and cultural differences would distinguish them from the people living there. So, does being different mean someone deserves to be treated differently? Does having a different accent or coming from another country make someone’s life any less valuable? We cannot preach equality while treating people differently because of where they come from. No one should have to fear for their life simply because they do not look, speak, or sound like the people around them. At the end of the day, a 15-year-old boy lost his life.
