It was a culture shock for the allies my Russian grandpa would say ! He gave many kisses to them and all were unprepared for the first time, had no idea what was going on or why! [laugh] Many were shocked, others were shy and wanted to be nice by accepting it and a few he knew were secretly gay cause he’s bisexual so yeahhhh he can pick up on those subtle things . But the allies were also not prepared by how platonically affectionate USSR were towards each others and others , so much hugs and cuddles ! My grandpa laughed and laughed because one of his friends, a tall and bigger guy, would just bear hug random ally soldiers and carry them !! Also they would gift food and both sides would attempt to teach each others language

Completely normal part of Russian culture, while in the rest of eastern Europe I cannot say we exactly kiss on the mouth we also greet each other by kissing each other on the cheek, regardless of age or gender

For anyone confused this is called the Socialist Fraternal Kiss. The practice evolved from the Russian Orthodox "kiss of peace," where believers exchanged a three-fold kiss on the cheeks (left, right, left) during Easter and other religious holidays to show Christian brotherhood, regardless of social status. Very common and was more akin to how we view a handshake/hug.

In my Russian culture class we were taught that it was common to greet friends/allies with a hug and kiss on the cheek, and that a lot of Americans get weirded out because of our “personal space” culture lol. It’s interesting how different people express feelings.
