@oliverknott2020: 💚 Emerald Green Eels from China by 鳗鲜水产 These wild-caught eels from Chinese rivers are most likely Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica), a species naturally found in China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Despite its name, the Japanese eel is not restricted to Japan. It spends much of its life growing in rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters before migrating thousands of kilometres into the Pacific Ocean to reproduce. Japanese fisheries and scientific publications describe individuals with greenish-grey to deep green backs. In Japan, particularly around Kojima Bay, greenish eels are traditionally known as Ao-unagi (青うなぎ), meaning "Blue Eel", although their colour often appears green. However, there is a serious conservation concern. The Japanese eel is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with populations threatened by overfishing, habitat loss, migration barriers and other environmental pressures. A beautiful and fascinating fish, but also a reminder of why protecting our freshwater ecosystems matters. #AnguillaJaponica #JapaneseEel #FreshwaterFish #EndangeredSpecies #FishConservation
