@12onyourside: A Petersburg homeowner is seeking answers after she was told a year into living in her home, her family’s backyard does not belong to them. Brittany Ellerbe and her husband bought a nearly 100-year-old home on South Dunlop Street in 2025. She said shortly after the couple marked one year of homeownership, a realtor representing the now former owner of a home on the adjacent Wilcox Street, came to their door.

What taxes has she been paying?? Adverse possession means it's hers if she's been paying.

Surveys use to be mandated by banks & mortgage companies prior to closing. This is awful!

Wait, the workers took down part of the fence and used it to line a different portion of the neighbor's lot? So they also stole a portion of her fence

I feel for really bad for her. However, she should’ve got a survey done when she put that fence in. I’m surprised the town didn’t require a survey when putting a fencing in.

As soon as somebody would’ve knocked on my door, I would’ve been going to get a survey. I sure the fuck wouldn’t have wait a month.

She needs to get a surveyor out there ASAP. Get a second check from two surveyors just to be sure. Why do these problems arise every time someone puts up a fence? None of this chaos broke out until that fence went up.

If she didn’t get a survey when she purchased the home, she should’ve purchased a title insurance policy that covers boundary disputes. They didn’t mention this in the story, but hopefully she has title insurance.

How can the city say its a matter between the two property owners when the city and county are the ones who define property lines on lots/parcels for home owners??? City & County records should undoubtedly show where the property ends and begins...

I’ve owned a few houses and never had a survey done. The deed should identify the dimensions of the property.

This firm is very shady. I’ve had an experience with them as well. But did you get a survey when you bought your house in 2025?

Something similar happened to me. A guy was renovating and put a shed on our property. He said it was there temporary. He sold the property with a picture of the shed still on our property. A new owner bought the property. The previous owner took his shed but the new owner put a shed there thinking it was ok. We had to show him survey that it’s on our property. He moved it. We should have been assholes to the previous owner an told him to move immediately. But was trying to be neighborly.

So she doesn’t have a backyard at all? Everything off that step is the neighbors yard?
