@news.trending7: The Secret Garden Becomes A Dark Thriller In Katie Bernet’s New YA Novel Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary Katie Bernet is putting a new twist on a childhood classic. PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, a thriller from the bestselling author of Beth Is Dead. It reimagines Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 novel The Secret Garden. In this version, young Mary Lennox witnesses the Mr*rder of her aunt Lily. The tragedy sends Mary back to America and ends her trips to Misselthwaite Manor. Eight years later, a newly orphaned Mary returns to Yorkshire. The manor is decrepit and decaying. The garden where Lily was k*lled is off-limits. As Mary begins her own investigation in the garden, she learns terrifying secrets her family tried to hide. Bernet says she and her mom watched The Secret Garden movie on repeat when she was a kid. She called a gothic mansion on the Yorkshire Moors the perfect setting for a young adult mystery-thriller. She also said Mary’s bond with Dickon Sowerby was “a friends-to-lovers subplot waiting to happen.” In the book, the characters are aged up to 18. In the excerpt, Mary arrives at the airport with a suitcase and a duffel that hold her entire life. She is greeted by Nell Sowerby, who warns her, “Brace yourself. The manor’s changed.” Mary also reveals a secret she has not told her uncle. She does not plan to leave at the end of the summer. “I can’t wait for readers to return to Misselthwaite Manor with me,” Bernet says.
