@best.flightclips: July 2, 1937, Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island: at about 8:43 a.m. the cutter Itasca logged "we are on the line 157 337." The search covered about 250,000 square miles. In October 2026, one more lead on Nikumaroro was ruled out. #aviation #ameliaearhart #aviationhistory #mystery #avgeek
The numbers 157 and 337 refer to a compass direction of 157 degrees (southeast) and its opposite direction of 337 degrees (northwest), which Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan used to describe their line of travel in their final radio transmission on July 2, 1937

Voodoo Scope Wizard :
It was her bearing on a radio beacon radial. She was on the 157/337 radial. Flying on a heading of 337 is 180 degrees off of the heading of 157. The problem is she didn’t know which bearing to fly since technology didn’t show TO or FROM back then. This is “pilot shit” terminology!’

Why didn’t Itaska find her direction from her radio calls? They could then offer her the proper heading to reach them.
