Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez and spent nearly 40 years as its vice president, died Wednesday at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96. Huerta organized the national table-grape boycott of the late 1960s, which drew support from an estimated 17 million households and forced growers to sign the first union contracts for farmworkers. That fight led to California’s 1975 Agricultural Labor Relations Act, the first major law of its kind in the continental US, guaranteeing farmworkers the right to organize. She was arrested 22 times. In 1988, a San Francisco police officer beat her with a baton at a protest, breaking her ribs and rupturing her spleen. She used her $825,000 settlement to help migrant workers. She later lobbied for the 1986 immigration law that granted legal status to millions, and she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Huerta is widely credited with coining “Sí se puede,” the rallying cry Barack Obama later adopted as “Yes we can.” In early 2026, she told The New York Times that Chavez raped her in 1966. She said she stayed silent because “I just didn’t want to hurt the movement.”
