This is how a car differential works - Explained in 1937 better than today. If both rear wheels are locked on one solid axle, one wheel HAS to slide and skid on every turn. Because the outer wheel needs to travel farther than the inner wheel. So engineers invented the Differential. It's called differential because it can drive two wheels at DIFFERENT speeds. Here's the principle: Two wheels are on separate axles. A bar with spokes connects them. If the bar is fixed, both wheels spin at same speed - great for straight roads, terrible for corners. If you stop one wheel, the other stops too. So they put the bar on a PIVOT. Now if one wheel stops, the cross-bar swings and keeps pushing the other wheel. If both wheels are free, the bar doesn't swing and both move at same speed. To make it smooth, they added more spokes, filled the gaps, and turned those spokes into gears. That's your differential gears. Add a big ring gear connected to the engine's drive shaft and you have the modern rear axle. Power comes in at the center and splits perfectly to both wheels. This 1937 Chevrolet film still teaches it better than any modern animation.
