@the.lie.ledger: Alaska's Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski just stunned the political world by endorsing Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins for governor of Alaska! With just one week until Election Day, Murkowski is breaking with her own party and backing a Democrat instead of any of the THREE Republicans running for governor. Murkowski's father, former Republican Senator and Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski, is also endorsing Kreiss-Tomkins. That's right. Two generations of prominent Alaska Republicans are throwing their support behind a Democrat. This is an extraordinary development in one of the most closely watched gubernatorial races in the country. Here's what makes this even more remarkable: Donald Trump has already endorsed Republican Bernadette Wilson for governor. Trump has repeatedly attacked Lisa Murkowski, calling her a disgrace to Alaska and the Republican Party. But Murkowski isn't following Trump's lead. Instead, she's supporting Kreiss-Tomkins, a former Alaska state representative who has made bipartisan cooperation and practical problem-solving central themes of his campaign. And Murkowski isn't alone. Three former Alaska governors — Democrat Tony Knowles, Republican Frank Murkowski, and independent Bill Walker — have united behind Kreiss-Tomkins. Think about that for a second. Leaders from three different political backgrounds are coming together to support the same candidate. That doesn't happen every day. For years, Americans have heard politicians talk about putting country over party. In Alaska, we're watching a striking example of what that can look like in practice. Murkowski has a history of bucking Republican Party leadership, but endorsing a Democrat for governor with Election Day approaching puts her directly at odds with Trump's preferred candidate.
