I was just 3 minutes late. The result? A 4-day wait for my next flight, and an unexpected lesson in airline policies. On 31st October, I was scheduled to fly with Saudi Airlines from Jeddah to Lahore, with departure at 15:15. The boarding information clearly stated: “Gate closes 20 minutes before departure.” Unfortunately, I got delayed by just 3 minutes because I had to use the restroom. I reached the gate with 17 minutes still remaining before departure, but the staff informed me that the gate was closed and my flight was missed. I was directed to the airline office. I had never experienced this level of strictness before, but rules are rules, and I had to accept the situation. At the office, they asked about my visa. When they learned that I was travelling on an Umrah visa, they explained that under their policy, Umrah pilgrims could be facilitated with a free flight adjustment. However, the next available adjustment to Lahore was on 4th November. That’s where things became more interesting. I checked online and found another Saudi Airlines flight to Lahore at 03:50 AM on 1st November. I requested them to accommodate me on that flight, but they said it wasn’t visible in their system. If I could purchase it myself, I could do so. Before making any decision, I asked three important questions: 1. If I accept the 4th November adjustment, will Saudi Airlines provide hotel accommodation and meals? Their answer: No. Only the ticket adjustment. 2. Can we leave the airport and arrange our own accommodation? They said they would email the Hajj Ministry for permission. If permission was granted, we could leave; otherwise, we might have to remain at the airport. Imagine spending four days at an airport with your wife! 3. Could they reconsider and find us the nearest available flight? I requested them to take some time and explore other possibilities. Eventually, they came back with an alternative: 2nd November, 01:55 AM — Jeddah to Islamabad. It wasn’t my intended destination, but considering the circumstances, I accepted it as the best available decision. And that’s how I paid the price for being just 3 minutes late. Three lessons I am taking away from this experience: 1. Never underestimate airport deadlines. A 20-minute gate closure policy means exactly that. 2. Always have an emergency travel budget. Flight disruptions can cost you much more than the ticket itself. 3. When travelling with family, always have a backup plan for accommodation, food and alternative transportation. One more thing: As someone working in the Hajj and Umrah travel industry, this experience gave me a different perspective on airline operations, passenger facilitation and the challenges travellers can face when things don’t go according to plan. Sometimes, the best industry lessons don’t come from meetings or business discussions. They come from personal experiences. Have you ever missed a flight by just a few minutes? What happened next?
