#creatorsearchinsights #createsightinsight “Ida” by Franco & TPOK Jazz is a painful story about love, separation, sacrifice and broken promises. Released in 1986 as part of the TPOK Jazz 30th-anniversary project, “Ida” tells the story from the perspective of a man whose plans to marry Ida are disrupted by circumstances before his departure for Europe. The couple had already agreed to marry, and arrangements were being made for him to go to Ida’s family. But an important person was missing: his maternal uncle. In Congolese family and marriage traditions, the maternal uncle (noko) had an important role in such matters, so his absence meant the plans could not proceed. Then the man's opportunity to travel to Europe came. He had to leave, promising Ida that he would return. What was supposed to be a temporary separation gradually becomes the source of the tragedy. While abroad, he continues thinking about Ida and sends her clothes, shoes, jewellery and other items. He encounters difficulties along the way, including problems with his visa, but remains committed to the relationship. Eventually, however, he learns that Ida has been with another man and has had a child. This is why Franco repeatedly takes the story back to the promises they made: “Ndenge toyokanaki ngai na yo, ndenge tolakaki ngai na yo” — remembering how they understood each other and the promises they made. The chronological progression makes “Ida” particularly powerful: marriage plans → the maternal uncle's absence → departure for Europe → continued sacrifice → separation → betrayal → acceptance that the relationship is over. The tragedy is that the man did not leave Ida because he had abandoned their marriage plans. He left believing he could return and continue the future they had already planned. “Ida” therefore becomes a story about how distance and circumstances can disrupt a relationship that both people once believed was secure. Musically, Franco Luambo handles the lead vocal and narration, while Malage de Lugendo provides supporting vocals. Empopo Loway is prominently featured on saxophone, adding to the emotional character of the performance, while the TPOK Jazz instrumental section provides the interlocking guitar, bass, drums and percussion foundation. And on October 9, Congo Sounds Radio and House of Rumba will hold Franco Makiadi's 37th anniversary at Druids Lounge, Kangundo Road. #CongoSoundsRadio #RumbaWithoutBorders #MutuImportanteRumba
