@drwilliamli: ๐ฆ Why does immunotherapy work for some cancer patients but not others? Could your gut bacteria be part of the answer? ๐ Subscribe to my newsletter to get the full science behind the gut bacteria and immunotherapy link. Link in bio. ๐ฌ In a study published in Science in 2017, researchers examined the gut microbiomes of cancer patients receiving immunotherapy. They discovered that patients who responded to treatment were more likely to have a beneficial gut bacterium called Akkermansia muciniphila. And here's where the research gets interesting. When researchers transferred gut bacteria from responding patients into mice, the animals showed improved responses to immunotherapy. Additional experiments suggested that Akkermansia itself could help restore treatment response in certain mice. ๐ฟ What does this mean for us? The foods we eat can help shape our gut microbiome. Foods like pomegranate, oats, and chili peppers contain compounds that may help support Akkermansia. Scientists are continuing to investigate how the gut microbiome influences cancer treatment and whether modifying it could help more patients benefit from immunotherapy. #Immunotherapy #GutMicrobiome #Akkermansia #CancerResearch #FoodAsMedicine #DrWilliamLi
