This situation is rooted in misogyny and racism, and honestly, you’re better than me because I would still be in shock that, out of all the men who were there, only ONE was willing to step in and say, “Okay, yeah, this is a bit much.”
I genuinely would not feel safe in that environment. I’m so sorry, because you’ve even said that you toned the situation down when explaining what happened, yet it was still aggressive enough for you to feel threatened. And there were men standing there watching it unfold, and only one person thought to intervene? That is absolutely disgraceful.
That gym would not see me again. I wouldn’t care about the staff or anything else. I want to feel safe in an environment where I’m paying to work out, and I want to know that if a situation escalates to the point where I feel threatened or fear for my safety, there are people around me who will at least recognise that something is wrong and be willing to step in.
I genuinely cannot understand how you’re supposed to walk back into that gym and feel comfortable after that experience. Hand on heart, how could you possibly feel safe there knowing what happened and seeing how many people were willing to stand by and watch? It’s actually shocking.
