@flyandfoto: The biggest mistake people make when chasing the Northern Lights? Planning a trip without giving themselves enough nights to see them. If you’re planning a Northern Lights trip to Alaska, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, or other Arctic destinations, there’s something you need to understand before booking. Cloud cover matters just as much as aurora activity. You could have an incredible Northern Lights display happening right above your head, but if the sky is covered in clouds, rain, or snow, you won’t see a thing. We’ve been chasing the aurora borealis for over 4 years, and our biggest piece of advice is to give yourself enough time. 💚 Stay at least 3–5 nights. Don’t plan your entire Northern Lights trip around a single-night aurora tour. Having multiple nights means you have more opportunities for clear skies if the weather doesn’t cooperate. 💚 Choose where you stay carefully. We love finding Northern Lights accommodations where we can watch the sky right from our room or property, without having to drive around in the middle of the night or go on a 5-hour aurora tour. Planning your first Northern Lights trip? We’ve put together a free Northern Lights Starter Guide covering when to go, where to see the aurora, where to stay, what to pack, and tips for photographing the Northern Lights.
