The Mocking of Christ by Matthias Grünewald is one of the most disturbing religious paintings of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. Painted around 1503 to 1505, this German Renaissance masterpiece captures the brutal humiliation of Jesus as a group of men surrounds and attacks him. At the center, Jesus sits blindfolded with his hands bound, unable to defend himself. One man pulls at the ropes while another raises his arm to strike. Around them, several figures watch, laugh, and encourage the violence. According to the Bible, Jesus was blindfolded, beaten, and mocked by men who challenged him to identify who had struck him. Grünewald captures this cruelty through violent movement, exaggerated expressions, and striking colors. The Mocking of Christ reveals the contrast between the helpless figure of Jesus and the aggression of his tormentors. It remains a powerful depiction of the Passion of Christ, Christian history, biblical suffering, and Northern Renaissance art. #MatthiasGrunewald #MockingOfChrist #JesusChrist #ChristianArt #ArtHistory
We reached Mt Kirkjufell, often called the most photographed mountain in Iceland. My first reaction? "Wow, it’s really beautiful." The waterfalls in front of it give it a view all its own. Now I know why. And yes, photos cannot capture its beauty. 🏔️ #marjtravels #iceland #mtkirkjufell
