And on selected voyages, as well as during major Catholic religious celebrations, Holy Mass may also be celebrated on board. The company's religious heritage stretches back many decades. As early as 1934, Catholic chaplains were serving aboard Costa ships, providing spiritual assistance to passengers and crew members. In 2006, the Holy See recognized Costa Crociere for its longstanding collaboration with the Catholic Church's maritime apostolate. The recognition highlighted the company's commitment to the spiritual welfare of people traveling and working at sea. Although Costa discontinued its regular onboard chaplaincy program in 2014, its chapels have remained places where passengers can pray.
