Everything you said was completely wrong lmao. 500k is a normal senior SDE salary at FANG. Roughly 1/3 of engineers are senior or higher. Staff is 700-800k. 1/8 engineers are staff or higher. Plenty of people spend their entire careers at FAANG

500k is total comp for seniors, staff is more like 650-700k. The turn over is high because they bounce to a better paying opportunity, usually related to the initial stock grant option that vests over 4 years, but commonly is front loaded over the first 2 years. They maximize their stock vesting, and then jump to a different high paying company where they used their old comp as leverage/number to beat.

I’d rather make $300k 1 year than work 3 years at a $100k job.

$200k is less than new grads at FAANG make. With 2 promos you’re at 500k. Every Principal I know makes 900k+

Senior (below staff for readers) can hit right around $500k total comp. If publicly traded, equity is basically like cash, and the hours aren’t very bad at all

turnover is high because mostly everyone in the bay moves here to maximize comp/net worth. cliff happens and they move for higher pay + new comp package

$500k total comp was normal 5 years ago when tech stocks were growing at an insane rate. Those same grants are worth a lot less these days with the tech stock slowdown/decline.

He’s spot on . And most of FAANG is total comp. Netflix is/was the only one giving high cash comp. Peronsally I prefer staying outside FAANG total cash comp and piece of mind are higher depending on your level
