@beaconpostpartum: Can we talk about how absolutely depressing pumping at 3am can be??? 😭 Because WHAT IS THIS LIFE. Sitting in a dark room, attached to a machine that’s making that weird little repetitive noise, staring at the wall while the rest of your house sleeps peacefully. And you’re just sitting there. Getting milked. Like an actual dairy cow. 🐄😂 Nobody tells you how weird this part of motherhood is. I remember looking at the clock one night and it was 3:08am. My baby was asleep. My husband was asleep. The dog was asleep. Even the freaking DOG was getting more rest than me. And there I was, sitting in a chair with my pumping bra on, eating a granola bar that had been sitting on the nightstand for two days. Just living the dream. 🙃 And the worst part? You can’t even really DO anything. You can’t comfortably lie down. You can’t go back to sleep. You’re stuck there watching the bottles slowly fill up while calculating how much sleep you could theoretically get if you finished pumping RIGHT NOW. Which, of course, you won’t. Because then you have to put the milk away. Wash the parts. Go pee. Get water. And by the time you’re finally back in bed, somebody is making noises on the monitor. 😭 I swear there were nights when I felt like I was the only woman on the planet awake. Like surely everyone else has figured out some magical system that doesn’t involve sitting alone in the dark with their nipples attached to a machine. Then one night I found this map showing other moms who were awake. And I genuinely laughed. Because there were SO MANY. Little yellow dots everywhere. California. Texas. Florida. New York. Moms awake at the exact same ridiculous hour as me. Some nursing. Some pumping. Some rocking babies who apparently signed a legally binding agreement to never sleep longer than 47 minutes. 😂 And I don’t know why, but seeing all those lights made me feel better. Not because it made pumping any more enjoyable. It absolutely did not. LOL. But because I realized there were other women doing this same lonely little routine. And then I got a hug from another mom. Just a tiny notification. Someone I had never met basically saying, “Hey, I’m here too.” 💗 And tell me why that almost made me cry??? Actually don’t tell me. It’s probably the hormones and the fact that I hadn’t slept more than three consecutive hours in approximately a century. 😂 But seriously. There is something about motherhood that can make you feel so isolated even when you’re surrounded by people who love you. Your whole world becomes feeding schedules and ounces and diapers and wake windows. You start measuring your days in how many minutes you have until somebody needs you again. And sometimes you miss being a person who could just… go to bed. Without a production schedule. Without equipment. Without wondering if your boobs are going to explode before morning. 🫠 And I think we need to talk about that more. Because you can be grateful that your body is feeding your baby AND absolutely hate pumping. You can love your baby more than anything AND wish you could have one uninterrupted night of sleep. You can be proud of what you’re doing AND be completely over it. All of those things can exist at once. ❤️ So to the mom sitting in her pumping chair tonight, watching the clock and wondering if she’s the only person awake… You’re not. Somewhere another mom is washing pump parts. Another is labeling a milk bag. Another is crying over spilled breast milk because YES, THAT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH CRYING ABOUT. And another is staring at her phone waiting for those last two minutes to be over. 😂 We’re all out here working the world’s weirdest night shift. And whether you’re pumping, nursing, formula feeding, or doing some combination that changes every other day, I hope you know you’re doing enough. Also, if nobody has told you lately… You deserve a medal. And a nap. And somebody else to wash the damn pump parts. 💗😂 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momlife #newborn
