@rocketgirlx3: One Pilot vs. 9 Bombers: The 4 Minutes That Made a Legend On February 20, 1942, Lieutenant Edward "Butch" O’Hare became a legendary naval hero when he single-handedly saved his aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, from a devastating air strike near Bougainville. After a radar alert spotted nine Japanese twin-engine Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" bombers diving straight for the carrier and his wingman's machine guns jammed, O'Hare was literally the only line of defense standing between the enemy and thousands of sailors below. Flying his F4F Wildcat with just about 34 seconds worth of ammo, he didn't panic or back off; instead, he aggressively dived straight into the bomber formation, holding his trigger until he was point-blank at around 100 yards to rip clean into their engines and fuel tanks. In less than four chaotic minutes, O'Hare shot down five bombers and heavily crippled a sixth, scattering the strike so badly that the carrier escaped completely untouched. That insane feat made him the U.S. Navy’s very first flying ace of World War II, earned him the Medal of Honor presented directly by President Roosevelt, and immortalized his name on Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

Originally named orchard field. Hence the code ORD. Was an airfield surrounded by apple orchards.

His old man was a hood, pushed the nomination. He was a hero. But story isn’t as clean as being told. Bootlegger father.
