@yapwithhala: A friend can be fun to be around and still not offer the support you need. On YAP, I sat down with psychologist Adam Grant (@adamgrant) to play through a relationship scenario: two longtime friends enjoy travel, laughter, and milestones together, but one disappears when life gets hard. Adam’s first read is direct: “Great pal, bad companion.” But he does not automatically label the person a bad friend. He asks whether you need this particular person to be a companion, or whether you are happy with the friendship as a pal connection. If you do want emotional support, his advice is to name the expectation rather than assume it is shared. Explain that the relationship matters, describe the companionship you are seeking, and acknowledge the support you also want to provide. Then ask whether that expectation is reasonable for the relationship. Enjoying someone and relying on them are different things. Clarity starts with the conversation you have not had. Would you keep a great pal who cannot be the companion you need? Follow @yapwithhala for more clips like this! To watch the full episode, click the link in my bio. 👆
