Yeah, Korea is that way. Japan too, very prejudiced against Chinese. Part of it is based on mainland tourists, but they’ll judge Chinese Americans, Taiwanese, etc the same way.

As an Asian. Historically, Asia is like this. Any country that succeeds starts to become toxic to the other Asians they consider below them. Hong Kong, Japan, now South Korea. I was in South Korea almost 40 years ago when it was poor.. Buying fake trainers in the national stadium. Even 15 years ago, I went for a weekend as part of my honeymoon. The Koreans weren't like they are now.

In LA, my Korean pilates teacher told me that I’m a very pretty Chinese woman. That felt real shady to me. 😏 why was my ethnicity thrown in there? 😒

SE Asian here. It's very unfortunate. I love all cultures especially our fellow Asians. But I got a "you're a dark Asian" comment from a girl who is Japanese Korean while in Los Angeles.

korea is insanely sinophobic, you can surprisingly often see people on weibo or even twitter who went there for plastic surgeries and stuff talking about how they were a victim of medical malpractice/negligence if the doctors knew they were/spoke chinese

yeah when I was in Japan and Korea I dressed down and did not wear anything that suggested I was ethnically Chinese and even didnt wear makeup (cos makeup style gives it away) and stayed speaking English 😭 this way everyone was nice to me and thought I was Asian from their country lmfao, tho in Japan i still ran into some rudeish ppl on train 😅

I hate to tell you but it is the same in Thailand as well, i am Singaporean and just went on a trip to Chiang Mai but they will straight up assume that I am chinese and some of them are so rude initially but after they concluded that we aren’t chinese they are so much nicer 😅

When I went they were like you’re so pretty are you Korean? I was like no I’m half Japanese. Let me tell you the disappointment on their faces was strong. Next time I’m gonna say I’m Korean haha
