@isabelrdfrd: Have we taken optimisation too far? We optimise to save time but we end up creating more tasks for ourselves, using up the free time we were looking for in the first place. #optimisation #productivity #burnout #loneliness #society
“True fulfilment doesn’t come from mastering your life, it comes from letting life touch you” wow I love this

Kurt Vonnegut wrote about this. He has an anecdote about going out every time he needs to an envelope instead of buying them in bulk and that we’re here on earth to dilly dally.

This feels so true for cooking, always sold the latest airfryer or chopping gadget when sometimes its just about enjoying the process of slow cooking and using a knife and chopping board myself !!

Honestly for me it really depends what I’n optimising for. There are many tasks I don’t enjoy doing so I would rather optimise them and save time to spend with my daughter or on my personal interests. As someone who in childhood experienced not having a washing machine, a shower or even a sink in the kitchen, I know how miserable I was spending all my days helping my parents with those endless tasks and now I truly appreciate being able to simply press a button and actually do what I love instead. 🥹

I don’t think so, I think being efficient with the boring stuff gives you more free time to do fun stuff

too much of anything is a bad thing. Not enough structure and optimization can lead to unhappiness. Too much can make you unhappy as well. Optimize as much as you need, but also have an open mind when things don't always go according to plan or to your arbitrary structures

I believe a big part of life is learning balance. Optimization feels like the opposite 😂🖤

Every time I go out for drinks by myself I end up meeting such interesting people and have the most raw human life experiences sometimes. Is being slightly hungover at work the next day inefficient? Yes. Does it add so much color to the scrapbook of my life? Hell yes

You're so right, we optimise to save time and then just fill it straight back up with more tasks, and a day with no gaps left in it stops feeling like your own. Isn't that closing line, 'letting life touch you,' the most beautiful way of putting what all the friction and gaps are actually for?
