There are so many people who are clearly engaged with art. You go to museums, you follow artists, you have saves full of work you love, you probably have opinions too… but you don’t cross over into collecting. And I don’t think it’s a taste issue, or even a money issue (at least not entirely). I think it’s how collecting gets talked about. Because the second you get anywhere near “collecting,” the language shifts. Suddenly it’s all asset class, investment, blue-chip, market this, market that. Like you accidentally walked into a finance podcast. And if that’s the framing, then yeah… why would you feel like you belong there unless you already have money or some kind of insider access? The way art collecting is often spoken about tells you collecting isn’t about your eye, it’s about your capital. And then on top of that, the only “collectors” you really see are people with serious money. Where are the people just figuring it out? Where are the people buying their first piece and thinking, wait… this actually matters to me? I almost never see those stories, which is strange, because those are the ones that would actually make someone think, oh, maybe I could do this too. Instead, it feels like you either stay an observer or jump straight to high-net-worth collector. There’s no in-between. But collecting, at least the version I’m interested in, feels much closer to just… paying attention and then acting on it. You saw something, it stuck with you, you went back, you supported the artist. That’s it. Not everything has to turn into a strategy. Anyway, I feel like if more people talked about collecting as an experience instead of an asset class, a lot more people would cross that line. Because the interest is already there. It’s just not being met in the right way. PS: sorry for the bad lighting and sound. I was in the basement. #artcollecting #artrookie #emergingcollectors #contemporaryart #arttok
