I'm a bit of a hippy but look into creeping thyme or something, no mowing, better for drought resistance and when it flowers it's beautiful ❤️

I've tried nematodes, but what worked best for me was encouraging birds onto the lawn. I scattered dried mealworms and seed on the grass to draw them in, and once they were there, they started picking out the leatherjackets themselves.

reseed it...you can't make it worse by overseeding no matter what you do... Just seed with good quality winter maintenance seeds. I recommend A1.
then sprinkle a bit of top spoil on top of the seeds to protect them from birds and stop them from washing away.
water them with some mist and press them down.
then use some winter fertiliser.
the winter seeds will germinate in very low temperatures and the feed will help the germination and protect the roots during the cold nights.
good luck.

Crane flies lay their eggs in the lawn and then the leatherjacket grubs eat the grass roots. You can pin a bit of black plastic down overnight to see if they're present on the underside. Wasting your time seeding it if that's leatherjacket damage. Nematodes will help.

could be keatherjackets, could also be from the super dry summer we've just had. Our lawn has ended so patchy where the grass died and didnt all come back

so I know nothing so looked it up and yes hurry up with the nematodes, even if temp is not perfect. it's still warm enough right now and they will get rid of the leatherjacket (daddy long leg crane fly) larvae. they are smallest right now they will get massive by spring and destroy the grass. so up to you. if you wait you may have to reseed or returf but only after you do the nematodes next autumn. (august/September 2027)

An idea. Use the neighbours shitty driving to plough the lawn this winter then re-seed and feed in the spring 👌
