@thebudgieacademy: Think your budgie hates you? This one's for you. Most of the time, a budgie who "hates" their person is a budgie whose attempts to connect went unnoticed. Here's how it usually happens. You show up with millet, the budgie panics, and you take that as proof they don't like you. Meanwhile, they were giving you smaller signs of interest that got missed: watching you, moving to the side of the cage closest to you, chirping when you walk in, staying relaxed and preening while you're nearby. Once you believe your budgie hates you, you stop looking for those signs. And when a budgie's bids for connection keep getting no response, they learn that reaching out doesn't work. So they stop. Now it really does look like they want nothing to do with you. Building a budgie who seeks you out works the other way: • Learn what your budgie's early bids look like. They'll be small, because a budgie who doesn't know you yet is testing the water. • Respond in the moment, as soon as you see one. Talk softly, offer something they like, or simply stay close and calm. • Do it every time. Budgies who get a response keep trying, and the bids get bigger.
