This is the mess they created 😂 Mr. Russell needed the aldermen to pass a law allowing him to build a new railroad station. So he suggested the aldermen to buy his company stock first, then pass the law so they will make a profit when the stock went up after the law and they can sell it. They agreed then betrayed him. What The aldermen planned to do is pass the law and rescind (repeal) it, knowing it would cause Russell's stock price to crash. Before doing so, they sold short – meaning they borrowed shares of Russell's company and sold them immediately, planning to buy them back cheaply after the law failed and pocket the massive difference. But instead of letting them destroy him, Mr. Russell used his personal fortune to aggressively buy up every single share hitting the market at the inflated price. This sent the stock price soaring instead of crashing. Because the stock price went up instead of down, the aldermen were trapped. They had to buy the shares back at a much higher price to return what they had borrowed, driving them into severe debt and financial ruin. They literally tried to double-crossed him because they are the ones who control the laws.
